Physical Modelling in the Laboratory^

When, Why and How!

This 4-day course introduces the attendees to the fundamental principles of scale modelling. You are provided with hands-on experience in designing and conducting experiments. The course is centred around a specific coastal engineering application. The course is aimed at engineers and staff with other technical background, who are taking up experimentation in wave basins or flumes.

Topics

  • Scaling principles and laws
  • Consideration on scale selection
  • Designing and constructing a scale model
  • Wave generation and absorption
  • Choice and use of instrumentation
  • Considerations for data collection and analysis

How to Protect and Develop Your Coasts

The purpose of the 4-day course is to give professionals involved in shoreline management an overview of coastal and estuarine dynamics. It is the aim to provide the participants with an understanding of the available tools and procedures that can help creating a sustainable and holistic management of the physical environment in the coastal zone.

The target group is professionals within the fields of coastal consulting, master planning, and coastal administration active within the field of shoreline management, planning of coastal development schemes and port planning.

Topics

  • Coastal and estuarine hydrodynamics
  • Coastal morphology
  • Estuarine morphology
  • Planning concepts
  • Morphological impact assessment
  • Introduction to numerical and physical modelling and data management
