Two new Local Area Weather Radars (LAWRs) have just been installed so that the total number of installations has now reached 10.
The first one has been installed at The Environmental Office of the United States Army - Combat Maneuver Training Center in Hohensfels, Germany. The radar (see photo on the right) will provide detailed information on precipitation used for modelling the soil moisture in the training area.
The second LAWR weather radar system has been installed in Australia, and is the first installation here. The radar is installed close to Goondiwindi some 400 km west of Brisbane and will be used to provide detailed information on precipitation on farmland. The radar image below shows a part of the 110 mm rainfall over the area on March 13, 2004 at 1 AM.
