More Potable Water to the Andamans

Consultancy services for development of fresh water reservoir, Port Blair, Andaman Islands, India

DHI is assisting the Port Administration in Port Blair, Andaman Islands, through Water and Power Consultancy Services of India Ltd. (WAPCOS) in the development of a freshwater reservoir to secure a sufficient and stable drinking water supply for the expanding area of Port Blair.

The project involves the following:

  • Technical advice, project management and support
  • 2D model studies on tidal propagation and siltation
  • Reservoir water quality modelling
  • Estimation of sediment yield from tributaries
  • Assessment of sediment behind the barrage
  • Design support to WAPCOS
  • MIKE21 transfer to Central Water and Power Reserach Station (CWPRS)

Port Blair is the extended landlocked harbour and headquarters of the Union Territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The population of Port Blair is at present about 300,000 and is increasing in this rapidly developing region of the Andamans. There is a severe shortage of drinking water and this is the reason for the plans to construct a fresh water reservoir in the vicinity of the town.

The Andaman Islands, together with the Nicobar Islands, form a continuation of the Burmese Tertiary folded mountains. The total length of these islands is 1640 km, cut by the 10° Canal, named for its location at 10° N. Geologically, the Andaman Islands consist of serpentine, sandstone and shale as well as younger coral reefs. The islands are covered with rain forest and mangroves fringe the coastline except at wave dominated locations. The Andaman Islands are located in the tropical monsoon area in the centre of the surface based monsoon region. The average temperature for the coolest month is more than 18°.
